"Even if you can avoid dying from cancer, you'll certainly face something else that will eventually kill you, because all of us are going to die. As good as modern medicine is, it is not the ultimate answer. It will let you down. Trusting God is the answer. He will never let you down." — Larry Burkett

"There is nothing to fear but fear itself." Danny has plenty to fear, but fear is not going to help his family.
I teach fifth grade and this is usually my students' favorite book that we read all year. Set in the Great Depression, Danny's family faces many challenges as most families did at the time. It is about what we do to survive the challenges that matter, and Danny has no choice but to step up and help his mother and little sister. My students enjoy reading about the challenges faced by Danny, his family, his friends, and his neighbors. It is a book that I could not put down. Do not be fooled by the cover, which looks very drab. The characters are filled with spirit, hope, and perseverance. This book gives children the opportunity to learn about history, but through the eyes of characters who live through it, which makes the learning more meaningful in my opinion. This book is outstanding!

I was diagnosed with cancer and have been on an emotional rollercoaster. Reading this book not only gave me hope but talked about how God is there for us during this difficult time. It made me want to fight and not focus on the negative but to focus on living. I believe God is on this journey with me and reading this book confirmed what I was feeling. Anyone suffering from cancer should read this book, it will make them want look at their situation in a "I want to live my life to its fullest" and focus on what I can do to help myself with God by my side. Remember there is nothing to fear with God by your side and ask for prayers from friends, family and church, this brings me such peace knowing I have so much support.

This book deserves the 5 stars and I think it took Larry Burkett so much courage to write about what he had gone through with the hope of helping others.

I read most of this out loud in car as we were traveling, because I just couldn't keep the many precious lines to myself! It really is a treatise on Philippians - "be content in all circumstances." There is great wisdom , precautions and encouragement to guide your own medical care, practical ways to research and come to a plan. The encouragement to make your plan with God and depend less on current wisdom really appealed to me, but in no way is the author writing off doctors and data.

Do bear in mind, the author passed away in 2003, had been searching and surviving for some years, so the specific information may be somewhat dated. The wisdom and encouragement will never be outdated. .

Given to me by my niece, an angel amongst us....I found the authors' brave journey encouraging and educational. At my lowest point after initially receiving the bad news about my cancer, I found myself "drinking from the fire-hose" taking in all the bad news about my situation and status. This book, his spirit....helped me grow in strength to turn on the cancer and begin my fight and battle against this insidious disease. I was surprised and thankful for the spiritual encouragement given by this author and His spirit. I think you will find the encouragement welcome regardless where you are currently - spiritually speaking. Thank you Larry Burkett!

I ordered this book by mistake as one I wanted was same title. But it was a great read anyway! Recommend it highly. Those of us who were raised during the depression will remember our parents struggle to provide for us and sacrificed their own needs to raise their families.

Great book for someone dealing with cancer. Lots of useful info. The author, Larry Burkett, did eventually die of his illness so this book is a little dated but still relevant. It outlines things he did to prolong his life after the initial diagnosis and treatment. He discusses treatments he tried that didn't work, and alternative treatments still worth checking into, along with diet, finances, etc. Reading the book can have a calming affect and give hope to the person struggling with this diagnosis. I have given a copy of it as a gift several times and I have always received thanks and good reviews.

This book gave me the blessing to enjoy my final visits with my best friend when we both knew her days on earth were drawing close to an end.

I recommend it to anyone who is struggling with a terrible disease and everyone who loves someone who is struggling. Larry's message gives the confidence to know all our days are shortening and we must cherish each moment we have.
My boys (13 and 11) LOVE this book! It's a gripping, Depression Era story that weaves non-fiction with fictional characters beautifully. We HIGHLY recommend this book!
