Praise for Diaries 1969-1979: The Python Years.

Praise for Diaries 1969-1979: The Python Years. For Palin it has been one hell of a ride, but he seems to have maintained equilibrium all along the wa. Michael Palin is not just one of Britain’s foremost comedy character actors, he also talks a lot. Yap, yap, yap he goes, all day long and through the night. then, some nights, when everyone else has gone to bed, he goes home and writes up a diary. Charming and at times revelatory.

Palin has a novelist's eye for character and detail, and his observations of the entertainment world, filmmaking, his family relationships, and such external details as politics, current . Great book, excited to read the rest of the diaries.

Palin has a novelist's eye for character and detail, and his observations of the entertainment world, filmmaking, his family relationships, and such external details as politics, current events, travel, and the weather are written with style and a distinctly subtle wit that gives this rich volume the drive of an epistolary novel"-Library Journal. Pythonphiles will find this essential, of course. But fans of good writing should dip into these pages, too, for Palin-Michael, not Sarah-knows his way around a book.

Halfway To Hollywood book. Halfway to Hollywood Book Description The second volume of Michael Palin's diaries, covering the 1980s, the decade in which the Monty Python gang grew apart as they forged separate careers.

Halfway To Hollywood. The world seems to have started 1980 so badly that I have on occasions this past week questioned the wisdom of working myself to a standstill when all the elements for the start of another global war crowd the newspapers for headline space. Ultimatums are flying around and ultimatums, to me, are synonymous with the outbreak of World War II.

MICHAEL PALIN, the seemingly most normal of the Pythons, is to be commended for his grafting – for his determination never to fritter away a single morning. My little single room is £51, a half-bottle of champagne is £1. 5

The second volume of Michael Palin's diaries covers the 1980s, a decade in which the ties that bound the Pythons loosened as they forged their separate careers. After a live performance at the Hollywood Bowl, they made their last performance together in 1983 in the hugely successful Monty Python's Meaning of Life.

A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction of 2011 title  The second volume of Michael Palin’s diaries covers the bulk of the 1980s, a decade in which the ties binding the Pythons loosened—they made their last film Monty Pyton’s Meaning of Life in 1983. For Michael, writing and acting took over much of his life, culminating in his appearances in A Fish Called Wanda, in which he played the hapless, stuttering Ken, and won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. Halfway to Hollywood follows Palin’s torturous trail through seven movies and ends with his final preparations for the documentary that was to change his life—Around the World in 80 Days.During these years he co-wrote and acted in Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits as well as spearing in Gilliam’s follow-up success Brazil. Palin co-produced, wrote and played the lead in The Missionary opposite Maggie Smith, who also appeared with him in A Private Function, written by Alan Bennett. In television the decade was memorable for East of Ipswich, inspired his links with Suffolk. Such was his fame in the US, he was enticed into once again hosting the enormously popular show Saturday Night Live. He filmed one of the BBC’s Great Railway Journeys as well as becoming chairman of the pressure group Transport 2000. His life with Helen and the family remains a constant, as the children enter their teens.Palin’s joy of writing is evident once more in Halfway to Hollywood as he demonstrates his continuing sense of wonder at the world in which he finds himself. A world of screens large and small.

I never realized what a busy life Mr. Palin led until reading this. He's definitely a multi-talented man! The diaries give an interesting point of view on his work in acting, directing, and being a father & husband at the same time.
(Note: if you're looking for a "Python" diary, this is NOT it. Read Palin's first diary collection instead. The timeline of this book is AFTER "Flying Circus" went off the air and goes up until just before his "Around the World" project.)

Illuminating, thoughtful, funny, eccentric...in short, everything a diary/journal should be. Don't be surprised if you feel the urge to move on to Volume 3 (just out) or see what Volume 1 is like.

Really fun read! I'd bet Mr. Palin is sick of hearing this, but he seems like such a decent guy!!! The nuts and bolts of film making and the collaborative process I found extremely interesting.

As Michael Palin is my favorite Monty Python, I am a fan of his various works, including his books. I like reading about this experiences. I wasn't able to get this volume at the bookstore here in the US by me, but thanks to Amazon I was able to acquire it. I love that he includes pictures.

Palin is an engaging diarist. To follow the progress of his life and works is very interesting and engaging. I look forward to reading the next volume.

Besides being an actor and comedian, Michael Palin is certainly one of the best authors in the UK! From the early days of Monty Pythons to all the current Round the World BBC documentaries, Palin is definitely an all-around talent with great humour, sometimes very dry indeed, which gives the readers an amazing feeling of his adventures in modesty! Most amusing and certainly recommend this diary to anybody who enjoys the fun of Michael!!!

Great book, excited to read the rest of the diaries.
The guy should have run a university, too!
