Vincent Price: A Daughter's Biography. The mellifluent Vincent Price is best remembered for hamming it up in campy horror classics like ''House of Wax'' (1953), ''The Fly'' (1958) and ''The Masque of the Red Death'' (1964), yet fewer than a third of his more than 100 films were in the horror genre. Born into privileged St. Louis society in 1911, Price enjoyed a life that blended highbrow and lowbrow culture. He went to private school.

Since his death in 1993, Vincent Price's legacy as a Hollywood legend has only grown in stature. His lengthy and distinguished career-as the voice of The Saint on the radio; as an actor in such unforgettable horror films as House of Wax and The Fly, in classic movies such as Laura and The Song of Bernadette, and on popular TV shows such as Batman and The Brady Bunch; and as a star on the Broadway stage-spanned sixty-five.

Vincent Price was also a loving father to his daughter Victoria, who was born shortly before he turned fifty-one, at the height of his popularity. Though the star’s busy film schedule took him in and out of his young daughter’s life, he was always a larger-than-life presence and, simply, her father. The deep bond between father and daughter managed to survive the machinations of Price’s third wife, the elegant British actress Coral Browne, who resented the close relationship between Price and his children and grandchildren.

Price emerges as one of his most complex characters in this entertaining and touching biography," observed The New York Times of Vincent Price: A Daughter's Biography. In this candid and heartfelt biography, Victoria Price traces her father's 65-year career from his radio days to his movie, Broadway, and television performances. A thorough and uniquely intimate look at the life of a legendary actor, the book also recaptures Price's many other roles, which included art historian, gourmet chef, and loving father.

Vincent Price's daughter tells his story, tracing her father's career from his earliest years in St Louis through his first stage appearances in London, to New York, then Hollywood. At least half the book is taken up with his well-know proclivity towards the arts. The actor's accomplishments are tremendous, of course. After an early stage success he became typecast eventually for fright pictures, a two-edged sword that kept him going for a long time. But he managed to use his final experiences, to include a touring one-man show as Oscar Wilde, to test his real acting abilities. Of course, to all of us, Vinnie will always be the Abominable Dr. Phibes, and Theater of Blood's vengeful Lionheart, or the white-haired master of the house of Usher. Ms. Price does not evade Vinnie's flaws, including his efforts to avoid blacklisting and his minor role in the game show scandals to his more lamentable refusal to confront third wife, Coral Browne, when she cut him off from old friends and his children due to jealousy. A modern renaissance man who's skills ranged from menacing on-screen camp to cooking fish in a dishwasher on the Tonight Show. His final years, as age and illness sapped his strength, are sad to read. Towards the end, he was able to go out in public without being recognized, by relying on his age, his wheelchair, and a big hat pulled low. Although no doubt disappointed by his loss of vigor, Vinnie did get a chance to truly test himself as an actor towards the end of his acting career and, after Coral's passing, reconnect with his family. Very good book.
My mother grew up in Missouri, knowing in her childhood Vincent Price and Betty Grable.... She often spoke of the intelligence and wit of Vincent. I was always amazed at the range of his acting talents, and his love of the art world and desire to open up the appreciation of fine paintings to more people.
Great book. His daughter obviously loved him, but she doesn't get sloppy about him or gush over him. She writes alot about the time from birth to his college years, but it's not boring. Mr. Price's life was fascinating! This is a wonderful book. I highly recommend it.
Dead Samurai
I have completely adored Mr. Price since I was three years old! His daughters book is loving, informative and straight forward. A wonderful tribute to a very humane and sweet man and brilliant actor. Thank you Victoria, you're a good daughter and you done him proud.
Victoria Price is a wonderful writer and gave superb insight into the life of her father ..She provided so much information and interesting history of the times he was growing up in St Louis Missouri....... so much detail which accorded his life --- a page turner for biography lovers
truly amazing - loved it
Not exciting, mostly about film, not intimate, a pretty standard biography
This book is well written and presents the story of a fascinating man in the rich historical context of world history as well as an insightful look into the world of art, theater, and screen.
Interesting for fans and film historians because Price had a long and varied mid-century career. I am not a fan but I appreciate Price's work as a professional actor. My interest was really in filling in gaps about film production during the 40s and 50s. The book served that purpose.
