Mr. Douglas was very honest about his life, his foibles, and I was so glad he finally settled down with a good, loving wife. It was one of the more delightful autobiographies I have read lately. 4 people found this helpful.

The Ragman's Son is the title of the first autobiography by actor Kirk Douglas, published in 1988

The Ragman's Son is the title of the first autobiography by actor Kirk Douglas, published in 1988. In this book, Douglas chronicles his life story, from his beginnings as the only son in a family of six girls born to a poor Jewish immigrant, to his lust to become an actor. He writes about studying drama at college, to getting his big break in Hollywood and of his later years where he jokingly remarks that he is now best known as the father of actor Michael Douglas.

Twice married, once divorced, the father of four sons, the author, 71 years old, felt intimations of mortality following a heart seizure, which became for him an occasion to assess his life, to balance the books on Issur Danielovitch, known in boyhood as Izzy Demsky, in celebrity as Kirk Douglas. Authentic, revealing, unself-conscious and self-centered, his performance here is a star turn.

Revealing life story told with verve and apparent honesty. Mr. Douglas' account of his early years was especially engaging; the Hollywood years not so much. One comes away with a feeling of admiration and respect for the author.

Crazy
"The Ragman's Son" is one of the best autobiographies that I have read. This book tells the reader how Kirk Douglas's father sold rags in Amsterdam,NY to make a meager living and support his Family. Beside being one of our all-time great actor's Kirk also broke rules during the filming of "Spartacus" and furthered the careers of actor's thanks to his courage and "sticking his neck out"! KIrk Douglas is now 98 years young and I hope that he surpasses 100! I highly recommend reading this book to all Kirk Douglas fans and also lovers of the 'ol Hollywood!
