I build mountain dulcimers and the book I prefer to give with my instruments is this one by Madeline MacNeil. She wastes no time and is very thorough from basic tuning of your instrument, strumming, retuning for different sounds and finally finger picking, I have several other teaching books but this is the one I prefer. Without the video, this book is virtually useless. The illustrations are not illustrative. There are tons of assumptions made by the author who is a wonderful dulcimer player and teacher. Don't buy this book w/o the video instructions, it's a waste of money.

Surprisingly easy to follow even though it moves into more challenging fingering fairly quickly. Much better than an online tutorial that I tried which dragged on on the most repetitive, boring strumming forever.

I purchased the accompanying DVD with this book and was able to get a very good idea of how the dulcimer is played. The only confusion I had was tuning the melody string. This was soon cleared up, but I broke a string first! The songs included are good, and it gives songs in three different tunings (DAA, DAD, and DAC). I am now ready for more, based on the grounding I recieved from this book.
