The Liturgy of St. Basil is sung in the Coptic language, directly descended from the language of the pharaohs, and the melodies are also thought to have their roots in ancient Egypt. This book, with musical score and trilingual text, provides fascinating documentation of this ancient tradition. Transcribed here in its entirety for the first time, the liturgy is part of a unique musical tradition transmitted orally through some twenty centuries by generations of singers in Egypt’s ancient Coptic Orthodox Church. The cantors appointed to record the liturgy for this compilation are known today as the most accurate bearers of this ancient heritage, and the recordings have been transcribed using Bela Bartok’s system of notating all material sung or played, including all ornaments on the music, the small formulae in detail, the extended melismata on vowels, and variations in tempo. The Coptic text of the liturgy is given in full, along with complete translations in English and Arabic. In addition, rubrics have been added to the text describing the actions of the officiants during the course of the liturgy. This unique publication will be of great value to Copts around the world, as well as to musicologists, ethnologists, and students of religious traditions.

This is the only edition of this important liturgy of the Coptic Orthodox Church with complete musical transcription, which in itself constitutes the chief value of the book. In addition, the complete text is given in English, Arabic, and Coptic in parallel columns. The binding is attractive and durable, and the layout beautiful. A very minor inconvenience, necessitated by the layout, is the separation of the musical transcription from the text, but each musical passage has a reference to the page where the corresponding text is found.
This book is a treasure for anyone interested in the liturgies of the Eastern Churches, or in Coptic language, or Coptic liturgical music.

This is a book that contains the musical notation of the entire liturgy of St. Basil the Great used by the Coptic Orthodox worldwide today. It also documents all the ornamental voice inflections that make the Coptic Hymns so unique and complex. This is a great buy!

This is a fascinating book, and in many ways a real treasure. I only give it 4 stars though, because the CD that accompanies it has no track listing, I can't find one anywhere, and it took 2 hours just to figure out where the track 1 material is in the book. It doesn't start at the beginning, and it skips over a good deal of the text. If someone could post a track listing here, I'd be grateful. If no one does, I will post one eventually, but it's going to take a while!

What a great, inspiring work of worship has been accomplished in this statement of faith by the ancient Christian church in impressive liturgical form. The original Coptic language is translated into harmony with both English and Arabic. The actions of the priest and the choir are described in both living languages. The musical notes and corresponding chant syllables are clearly printed. Music scholars, religious scholars, researchers in ancient languages will all find rich rewards in this volume. The "ordinary" person-in-the-pew who loves Biblical Scriptures will also find confirmation and awe in the deep worship that has survived since the first century. The reader of this work will find the introductory remarks instructive to his study and worship. And if the reader has Arabic as his primary language, he will be impressed to have this volume also readable from back-to-front and left-to-right, with the English and Coptic also accompanying.

I agree with the reviewer below - we need to have a CD track listing so we can follow along in the book while we listen to the CD. That being said, it is an absolutely marvelous publication. Beautifully done and certainly an exquisite collection to add to anyone's library.
