Start by marking Short History of English Church Music as Want to. .All that said, Routley's prose is fantastically spicy and a delight to read even when he makes points I may disagree with.

Start by marking Short History of English Church Music as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. I think this is probably a great book for its intended audience, but I found it very obtuse for a number of reasons: It was written in 1975 and as such its definition of "contemporary" is quite dated. Even Lionel Dakers' excellent addendum only brings the material up to 1996. It takes for granted the reader's thorough understanding of Anglican polity and liturgical practice.

Erik Reginald Routley (/ˈraʊtli/; 31 October 1917 – 8 October 1982) was an English Congregational minister, composer and musicologist. He was educated at Lancing College and Magdalen and Mansfield Colleges in Oxford. He was chaplain of Mansfield from 1948 to 1959 and then held appointments as minister in Edinburgh and Newcastle before becoming Professor of Church Music at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, New Jersey in 1975.
