If you're like me you can get really tired of the method book. As good as that book is, the music exercises they have in there are just cheesy. They're also too short, and if you want to really get the hang of whatever it is you're covering you need to play those half-page (sometimes less) exercises over and over. It gets tiring.

I have just started playing through this first book and it is really showing me how poor my sight reading skills are, which is surprising because I'm already halfway through the 2nd Bass Method Book! I think that really says something about how the method books brush over things so quickly. I can tell this songbook is going to be of great help. The songs are full-length, can help you get used to playing with a "band", and are actually fun to play! They're all well-known pop songs. If you're looking for more exercises this book is a great buy.

I've played bass in rock, blues, and funk bands for over 20 years - everything by ear. Now I've decided to learn sight reading - beginning with Hal Leonard Bass Method by Ed Friedland. Excellent method with cool little etudes, but I wanted to play something a little more fun. This book fits the bill - tunes get progressively more difficult, and NO TAB - probably a detractor for some, but tab becomes a distraction for me.

Tracks are nicely done as well - tunes stay pretty close to the original with a sax playing the vocal melody. Overall 20 tunes for under $12...great sight reading practice.

My only criticism is it would have been better if Hal Leonard published the tunes so you didn't have to turn the page. Some of the songs have page turns at inopportune times...but I guess thats the case in a real playing situation too!

This is a great songbook for beginning bass players. I got it as a gift for my son who has been playing for less than a year.

Similar to my other review, the tune selection is good, and they reinforce what the Bass Method book teaches. I'm not a fan of the backing tracks but they get the job done. I ended up playing with the actual tunes for some of the songs I really liked.

I am an experienced musician but new bass player. I bought this to go with the Hal Leonard Bass method. The songs are well chosen and it's a nice confidence booster to be able to play real bass lines immediately. The difficulty progresses, more or less, though if you can read music already you may find some of the later ones pretty easy. Each song also emphasizes a point or two made in the lessons. You'll have to read ahead a little in the lessons if you want to start the songs immediately. Even after finishing Hal Leonard Book One, I'm finding some challenge in these songs. I agree that the accompaniment tracks can be cheesy at times, but it's great practice for playing with a band and learning the structure, especially with more repetitive lines. All arrangements are in the original key and tempo, so you can play along with the original track, too, though I can hear myself better with the accompaniment tracks.

Very glad to have this book of easy bass lines. I'm learning to play, and this is an excellent supplement to the Hal Leonard introductory method books.
Perfect supplement to the Hal Leonard Bass Guitar Method Book. Songs get harder as you move through the book. Nice work!
