Great for any beginner and intermediate musician who wants to learn the language of music, or who merely wants to brush up on their skills and refine their practice. Amazing resource, the exercises are precise and easy to understand and so is the material that encompasses this product. Would recommend in a heart beat (actually already did.. twice).
Musical theory book. Not geared for the beginning musician. User needs to have some prior basic knowledge of music before using this room.
I bought this for my teen aged grandaughter who lives in Africa. She asked for it and I don't really know first hand much about the lessons. However I am sure she benefitted from them.
This book covers the top three levels of the Rudiments assessments of the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program. (For details about the items tested on these levels, download the Theory Syllabus at [...] If the link is blocked by Amazon, you can search for the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program online, then select The Program from the menu, then click on Syllabi.) The Royal Conservatory Music Development Program is an assessment program throughout Canada and the United States with assessments of playing techniques on a variety of instruments as well as musical theory. Tests are available three times a year. Rudiments are the theory assessments made prior to Harmony, Counterpoint, and Analysis.

As mentioned before, the book covers Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Rudiments. However, the book is organized by topic, not by level. In other words, for someone learning Rudiments, this book is not the best choice. Instead, look for a separate book for each level. As each level is mastered, schedule the equivalent assessment. It may cost a little more, but will be much easier on the student. Additionally, the book isn't the best for learning the subject without an instructor. The explanations given are not very detailed. It's more than an outline, but less than a full blown text book. (Over half the book is a workbook on the topics covered.)

On the other hand, if the student has significant amount of experience in music and is planning on skipping the earlier assessments and going straight to the Advanced Rudiments assessment, the organization of the book works fine. (I will try to remember to update this review after the assessment results are posted in January so that I can comment on how well the book covers the topics on the assessment.) I already had learned quite a while ago much of the information given, so the book worked well as a review of material I knew with enough information about the stuff I didn't know that I was able to fill in the gaps.

One thing that surprised me about Rudiments as defined by Royal Conservatory is that Advanced Rudiments include some material I would have considered Basic Harmony, including an introduction to cadences and translations of music terms from one foreign language to another. Which is why I didn't skip Rudiments and go straight to the Harmony assessments.
