Modimeena
After two French books, "La douleur de ma vie" by his mother, Anna Lipatti, and "In memoriam Dinu Lipatti 1917-1950" by his wife, Madeleine Lipatti, both published in Geneva, one in 1967 and the other in 1970, now we finally have an English book dedicated to the memory of Dinu Lipatti. Congratulations here to Mr. Tanasescu and Kahn & Averill for undertaking such a project, a timely and precious gift to the musical world. Lipatti may have died at the tragically young age of 33, but his supreme musicianship will always live and be remembered forever.

Lipatti was without any doubt one of the greatest pianists of the 20th Century (or any other century for that matter). His EMI recordings, totaling about 5 hours of music, will always be the stuff of legends. Many of these, from Chopin's Piano Concerto no. 1 and Piano Sonata no. 3, to Enescu's Piano Sonata no. 3 and Ravel's Alborada del Gracioso, will always be regarded as the standard by which other present and future generations will be judged.

Little is known, but Lipatti was also an accomplished composer, and the quality of his 15 or so compositions is testimony to his musical genius. Walter Legge, the legendary EMI producer once said about Lipatti: "God lent the world His chosen instrument who we called Dinu Lipatti for too brief a space". Listing to Lipatti's magic music one can only see that every single word of that is true.

Until a more complete or definite biography about Dinu Lipatti is written, "Lipatti" by Grigore Bargauanu and Dragos Tanasescu will remain a valuable foundation from which to understand the complete devotion and musicianship of one of the most gifted pianist/composer, the world has ever heard. Much of this book is devoted to understanding Lipatti's music, his teaching, composing and those important in his musical development, all of which is quite insightful. Unfortunately, stricken by Leukemia in late 1943, the next seven years until his premature death were tragic, indeed. The book sensitively illuminates the courage and generosity of Lipatti during this torturous period of his life. Yet, I only wish that the authors had attempted to understand in a more candid manner, the realities of the "non-political" Lipatti, who (like others) continued to perform in Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy throughout World War II. Nevertheless, in early 1943, Dinu and his wife Madeline decided to relocate, (or flee), from his native Romania and remained in Switzerland, thereafter. A more enlightening treatment of this aspect was provided by Jerome Spycket in his notes included in the 2CD, "Hommage" to Clara Haskil & Dinu Lipatti, "Two Luminous Beings" which I would also recommend. Two great artists of music, who, I believe, were both amazingly courageous in their respective ways.
