Joann Moser, with contributions by John Yau and John G. Hanhardt. Copublished with University of California Press. Over a period of fifty years, William T. Wiley has distinguished himself by creating an extensive body of work that challenges the precepts of mainstream art. Making art that is at once witty and serious, topical and discursive, Wiley’s practices range from traditional drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, sculpture, printmaking and film, to performance, constructions of assorted materials, and more recently, printed pins and tapestries.

What's It All Mean offers a freewheeling ride through the nooks and crannies of Wiley's witty, idiosyncratic, and sharply critical imagination, while holding up a telling mirror to American social and political life over the past half century. From abstract roots, Wiley developed an eccentric and introspective imagery, rich with self-deprecating humor and a sense of the absurd.

Books by Joann Moser. What’s It All Mean: William T. by Joann Moser and John Yau. Hardcover.

The retrospective exhibition of the work of William T. Wiley that this publication accompanies is the first to be organized since 1979, when Wiley Territory opened at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Thirty years later, What's It All Mean: Willliam T. Wiley in Retrospect, considers the artist's entire career (including films) through 2008. The art of William Wiley (b. 1937) has stood the test of time in the face of changing styles, successive movements, critical theories, and passing fashion. Wiley's self-deprecating humor and sense of the absurd make his art accessible even to those who do not comprehend his more ambiguous ideas, allusions, narratives, private symbols, and layers of meaning. His liberal use of puns makes more palatable his deadly serious commentary on war, pollution, global warming, racial tension, and other threats to contemporary civilization. Wiley is best known as a leading California artist, whose influence and importance in the San Francisco Bay area are well established. This exhibition and catalogue affirm his significance as an artist of national stature whose accomplishment resonates well beyond the region in which he has chosen to live and the time period when he first achieved recognition.Copub: Smithsonian American Art Museum

For those of you who are fully educated on the imaginary world of William T. Wiley,..this is the book to have! It covers everything from the mid 60's to the present(2008) in an informative retrospective. The color images of the artwork are amazing, and the content of his work strikes a cord with everything that seems unbalanced in the world. Wiley deals with the most crucial topics of our time and illustrates his works into a dialog that pokes fun at the problems as well as the solutions, and how common sense seems to have left the human race,....making his works a spiritual quest to communicate a more powerful message. I am in awe, and after having the pleasure of meeting Wiley a few times, I have grown to love everything his art is about. It is modernism in the finest! Anyone who is a simple fan will be thrilled to read and look through this book over and over. I can not wait for this exhibition to hit Berkeley in March 2010. I will be there on day 1.

This book was a complete work up to the date published of Wiley's work and although I have not quite finished reading, it is outstanding and inspirational. I have enjoyed seeing the quality photos in color and it has provided me with so many ideas of my own. Did not know something like that could be so exciting. It is a great book, well written, and upfront and honoest it seems.

I look for John Yau books, not to read them rather because he gets the best projects. The life work of William T. Wiley certainly merits a major monograph. So it is a pleasure to see his thoughtful work in a very nicely done book. Wiley is widely emulated. You can see why: He makes it all seem so easy. Just string a few twigs together, lard the tableau with a few puns, then flatten the layers into a delicious water color. Eye candy with ecotopian sentiments. Wiley's graphic facility is clearly calculated, it grabs your attention. Of course, the anticipated play on words is everywhere, invariably some reflection on the unbearable lightness of being or the unbearable gravity of others. I call it California PUNishment. It takes real genius to pull this off as well as Wiley has both in his career and with this book.
