Carol Belanger Grafton. The sixty posters in this soft cover book are a small selection of the nine hundred in the Library of Congress. The Dover book has the posters on a CD-ROM so you can pull them up on your pc in perfect detail but I wonder why this was done

Carol Belanger Grafton. The idea behind them was simple: to promote the ideals of America during the Depression years (and into the early forties) with simple, inexpensive posters that could be used anywhere. The Dover book has the posters on a CD-ROM so you can pull them up on your pc in perfect detail but I wonder why this was done. This poster art is not really usable for anything unlike a disc of alphabets or clip-art that could be used for various projects.

Although magazine advertisements, often richly illustrated, began to come into their own in the Nouveau period, a great deal of advertising, especially in Europe, was still done by way of posters put up in public places. These 58 full-color reproductions (plus 10 bonus images on the enclosed CD-ROM) tout ice rinks, art exhibitions, bicycles, restaurants, chocolate, electric fixtures, beer, "biscuits" (the European term for what we call cookies), champagne, the Automobile Club de France, galleries, tea-rooms, bars, even a veterinary clinic (a woman surrounded by her pets--three dogs and four cats). There are also magazine and calendar covers and title pages from books. The artists range from Aubrey Beardsley, Mucha, and Toulouse-Lautrec to little-known names like Maxime Fraikin and J. Zorl. A very common--one might almost say the predominant--motif throughout is beautiful women, often in exotic costume, one even with wings! The CD includes Dover Design Manager, which allows you to "browse, print, crop, and rotate the images."
