I found The Collapsing Universe by Isaac Asimov to be a very good jumping. Isaac Asimov is considered the best explainer of this era. This alone is a reason to read his books, but this one in particular is the best conversation starter in almost any outside activity at night, (or even during the day). Buy and read it. You will like it.

An easy to read and understandable look at the depths of space and beyond.

Black holes have captured public attention, and you can find a lot of books about them in book stores. There will certainly be many more to come. Some of the books will be fairly technical and some will be more popular. Some will be well-written and some will be almost unreadable. Some will be carefully researched and some will be pseudoscientific balderdash. Now I do not say that Isaac Asimov's _The Collapsing Universe_ (1977) is the only nonfictional book on black holes that you should have on your shelf. But I would argue that it is the best introduction to the topic. In his clear style, Asimov shows in a logical, step-by-step manner how we arrived at the stage where we believe that black holes might exist. Asimov points out that the evidence for the actual existence of black holes is very slim so far. There is perhaps a little more that has been gathered since the publication of this book. But I would still argue the evidence remains on the skimpy side. Black holes are a hypothesis that have not really been adequately tested. In any event, start your knowledge of black holes with this book. Then move to some of the more technical works by, say, Stephen Hawking.

I just finished this book for the first time and yes, it's classic Asimov. As with everything he writes, Asimov begins at the beginning and takes you through a step-by-step approach through the relevant history of astronomy and ever-increasing masses of heavenly bodies until he finally reaches black holes only in the last quarter of the book. Other books might skip all the crucial background information that is necessary to understand how matter can compress to a singularity.

The book is a little dated as it was completed in the seventies, but the information is still quite solid. You might wish to buy a companion book that is more up-to-date, but I wouldn't skip this as it's eminent readability still provides for a wonderful introduction to black holes.
