I remember this book from when I was an 8 year old boy. My oldest brother borrowed it from the local library here in Franklin, PA back in the day when the library here carried the book. Sometimes my Mom and all of us brothers and sisters would stop at the library. When my oldest brother borrowed this book, I would look through it and read through it with aw and fascination for like my oldest brother, I have always been a sci fi/fantasy fan since my childhood. These illustrations take me back to a time of childhood when things seemed awesome and great, even at 8 years of age. The pictures have always stuck with me throughout my life in my memory. I am very happy that I purchased this book. The artists who drew these pictures have done an awesome job making everything look so real practically down to the nitty gritty detail. When I was 8, that was also a time when science fiction and fantasy seemed to be really big as well just like it seems to be again today. Seeing science fiction and fantasy big again today makes me wish I was a child again as opposed to an adult that I am now. I would recommend this book for anybody who is a science fiction fantasy fan no matter how young or old the fan is.

Love the vendor, but this book reminded of how much this booked sucked. It's like the publisher recycled a bunch of scifi art it couldn't sell and wrote a generic scifi history book to go with the short stories they wrote for each image. The re-seller is great. Don't judge them by this book.

I've had a copy of this book in my library since 1979. The fact that my original copy has all but disintegrated from use led me to recently purchase a collectable copy. This book is a unique, refreshing and strange pastiche of capsule reviews of influential science fiction works juxtaposed with its own engrossing future history told by way of the picture captions. And, oh, those pictures! This book is overflowing with the best and most glorious SF art of the early 1970s. They are the biggest single reason to buy the book, but the majority of the text stands the test of time. This book would make a great companion for anyone just beginning to explore the literary wonders of SF, as it was for me thirty years ago.

My only caveat is that although some have recommended the book for young children (and believe me, they would love it), some of the text contains mature themes and sexual content.

A really nice collection of that gorgeous old style of science fiction art that you rarely see anymore. The types of images that just set your mind off wondering in new directions.

My husband loved this book when he was a child and has really enjoyed the experience of flipping through the pages again.

This was one of the best Science Fiction Fantasy books I had as a kid, so I spent many hours studying the illustrations. I've searched over the years for the copy I had as a kid, and in the end purchased a copy. Looking back over the illustrations evokes so many childhood memories, so are so detailed!

If you ever wondered what combat in outer space would be like then this book is for you stunning art and witty with a nod towards All In The Family and Star Trek.
I bought the Stewart Cowley books ages ago when they were first published. And in those pages was a plethora of 1970s and 1960s sci art by such greats as Chriss Foss and Peter Elson. Next to them were captions describing the stories of the devices or things depicted.

But Space Wars is nothing of the kind. It's more or less a kind of Reader's Diegest trieste on science fiction in general, and nothing more. There are comments and references to popular sci fi, visual and written, but nothing beyond that.

There are some imaginative captions next to the artwork written within the pages, but nothing beyond that.

A bland book with an inviting title and cover, this was a bait and switch pulled on the the 1970s and 1980s sci-fi reading fan.

I would avoid it, even if you happen across a used copy.
