innovative, compelling, and revolutionary than was ever thought before.

From advertising and fashion to music and film, the psychedelic aesthetic defined the look of the 1960s. And yet neither the true scope of psychedelic art nor its key practitioners have ever been the subject of a thorough overview. Electrical Banana is the first definitive examination of the international language of psychedelia, focusing on the most important practitioners in their respective fields. Compiling hundreds of unseen images plus exclusive interviews and essays, it revises and expands the common perception of psychedelic art, revealing it to be more innovative, compelling and revolutionary than is usually acknowledged. Electrical Banana documents the great virtuosos of psychedelic art: men and women whose work combines avant-garde design with highly sophisticated image-making. Launching a million Day-glo dreams, the artists include: Marijke Koger, the Dutch artist responsible for dressing the Beatles; Mati Klarwein, who painted the cover for Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew; Keiichi Tanaami, the Japanese master of psychedelic posters; Heinz Edelmann, the German illustrator and designer of the Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine; Tadanori Yokoo, whose prints, books and fabrics defined the 1960s in Japan; Dudley Edwards, a painter, car decorator and graphic artist on the London rock scene; and the enigmatic Australian Martin Sharp, whose work for Cream and underground magazines made him a hippie household name in Europe. Electrical Banana features a lengthy historical essay and interviews with all of the artists.

Okay, this book is blowing my mind. First of all, the quality of the printing is beautiful (printed in Italy). Vibrant color. Love the feel of the cover, which is matte paper not glossy. The design sensibility throughout is flawless.

Most importantly, the artwork is amazing. I think one of the biggest strengths is that it is a focused survey of seven artists, so it dives deeply with about 20 images for each. And the interviews are very interesting - I particularly love the one with Yokoo, and his comments on his work. Opening interview with McCartney is good too. Martin Sharp. All good. I plan to keep this one out on the table. Highly recommend!

The Electrical Banana is a fantastic read from cover to cover. Gorgeous design and high-quality printing serve the colorful, mind-bending art very well. Extensive interviews with each artist give the reader useful insight into this extraordinarily creative period.

Rather than embark on an encyclopedic review of the development of psychedelic art, Electrical Banana shows the genre at its fullest expression through the work of seven master artists. Although each of these artists are imaginative and talented, I was immediately drawn to the work of Mati Klarwein. His painstakingly rendered, visionary paintings are incredibly exciting to explore. Klarwein's paintings are portals of ideas and time periods, containing a variety of references to popular culture, primitive and non-Western art, utopian mysticism, and totemic symbolism.

Also included is Paul McCartney's wild hand-painted piano, psychedelic Japanese pop art, vibrant examples of fashion from the period, and the artist behind the animated feature, Yellow Submarine.

Great book. I'm doing a body of pottery work on a 1960's psychedelic theme and this is the reference I needed. There is a chapter on each of several notable artists of the time. Illustrations are colorful and clear. Paper is good quality. Worth the money and extremely interesting information, too. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a good survey of the pop culture art of the 1960s.
