Each of the major trades is illustrated in sequences detailing machinery and processes from raw material to finished product. This is also the technology enjoyed by the early settlers of North America and Australia. The art work in the book in gripping.

Not for everyone certainly, but this, Diderot's full encyclopedia, was the internet of it's time. I only wish I could find the full text and not just the illustrations.

Each of the major trades is illustrated in sequences detailing machinery and processes from raw material to finished product. Not for everyone certainly, but this, Diderot's full encyclopedia, was the internet of it's time. Our present electronic technology is so precarious, so delicate. It would be good to at least know the old methods.

First published Wed Jun 19, 2019. Diderot’s public intellectual acclaim increased with each of these books, and by the time of the Lettre sur les aveugles he had become famous enough for Voltaire himself, already the public face of radical philosophie, to write to Diderot praising his books. But the same acclaim that attracted Voltaire’s attention also rendered Diderot suspicious in the eyes of the French authorities. No longer a translation of someone else’s book, and even less a staid compendium of already established learning, Diderot imagined the Encyclopédie as a dynamic site of living thought, an engine for changing, not codifying, existing knowledge.

Diderot wrote this himself as he did many of the articles describing particular trades and processes. With Introduction and Notes, 2 vols.

Two of Diderot’s most remarkable pieces are Jacques le fataliste (written in.Diderot Pictorial Encyclopedia of Trades and Industry, Vol. 1 Dover Publications, 1993. David Coward, trans.

Two of Diderot’s most remarkable pieces are Jacques le fataliste (written in 1773, but not published until 1796) and the dialog Le Neveu de Rameau (Rameau's Nephew). Jacques le fataliste et son maître is a humorous, ironic story of fate and individual choice. Several of Diderot’s books were confiscated because of their radical content, and did not appear in print until after his death, during the French Revolution. La religieuse, the story of a young girl who entered a nunnery and was corrupted by her Superior, was published in 1796.

This book is in great condition. It is solid, square and flat. It has a very clean & bright cover and very good edges. There is some bottom edge wear. The pages are tight, bright, clean & unmarked, no names. The jacket, with price, is also in very nice condition with a clean & bright cover. There is a total of 485 illustrated plates in both volumes

Ce
Great view of 17th-18th-early-19th century trades, equipment, tools, and processes.
Aiata
Nice selection of Diderot's prints from the encyclopedia, well annotated. Much more versatile then the paper bound edition. Highly recommended.
Dukinos
A fascinating survey of how to do or make almost anything. Beautuful illustrations. Nothing like it.
Altad
not exactly what I wanted.

This book presents in fantastic plates an insite into the technology available to 17th Century France. This is also the technology enjoyed by the early settlers of North America and Australia.
The art work in the book in gripping. I first saw this book in a library and rushed to buy it. Aside from its beauty, the book is very practical. I know that with a copy of this book, some clay, lumber and a timber saw, I will soon be casting bells and cannons, making my own blast furnace and maybe even a bronze statue.
This book helps you realise just how much effort was involved in producing many of the every day things we enjoy.
I gave a copy of this book to my dad who loves it.
A must have for when the "Big One" drops.
