I saw this sweater pictured on the cover before . not knowing what other patterns were in this book .I was taking a chance . the entire book is filled with sweater knits. some using large needles and yarn others look more like light weight wraps . this book is all rowan yarns, the sweater shown on the cover has long been a hopeful dream for me to knit. When I looked at the instructions . they are written in a way that I under stand . I have not started to use the patterns in this book yet . but I will do so.

I made the cover sweater with the stipulated yarn. It is a gorgeous piece, but...
1. The pattern was written, not charted. This was my first cable sweater and it was too labor intensive and tedious to knit from a verbal pattern so I taught myself to chart cables and translated the pieces.
2. Then I swatched the back. I was dismayed that all of the cables are mirror imaged EXCEPT for the large one. I swatched it several times, assuming that as a neophyte cabler, I had made some translation mistake, but no. The pattern was really written that way. It drove me crazy. I considered it to be an error, spoiling the symmetry, I studied the pictures. Note that the sweater is carefully posed and photographed so the asymmetry of that one cable doesn't show. I knew it would bug me forever so I tried to reverse the cable. Beginner's luck and chart assistance was with me, and I managed to get it right on my first try. That rather annoyed me because, if I could do it so easily, why had the pattern's author not done it? So I recharted the back with the corrected cable. Success with the next swatch. The sides are knit separately and please note that I also had to reverse the cable on one of the sides to preserve the symmetry. If I ever knit this again, I would probably combine the charts and knit the sides and the back all in one to eliminate the side seams.

2. I am 5'9" tall. I do not own elbow length gloves. I lengthened the sleeves A LOT. Notice the pictured, long gloves, attempting to camouflage the 7/8 awkward sleeves.

3. The yarn is very expensive, gorgeous and sheds like a beast.

4. I used real horn, toggle-type buttons that are very heavy. A belt like the pictured one helps to contain the weight so the front does not sag.

This was an interesting adventure. I learned a lot. I would give the sweater 5 stars for style and about 2 stars for the pattern as written, with the cable issue and lacking charts. I am proud of the finished sweater coat and it suits my style. The pictured yarn color contains a subtle blue fleck that coordinates well with my skinny jeans and I wear it when I am not concerned about fuzzies coating my clothing. I knit this several years ago and have no idea if the recommended yarn is still available.

The cover sweater coat is the only pattern in the book that I knit so I cannot comment on the rest of the patterns.

I had found 4 patterns I liked from this book on Ravelry so, I bought the book. I am so pleased with it. Pictures of each sweater are included in the front pages and they are so beautiful. I like sweaters with a unique twist or a bit of character to them but, that aren't out there; not the ho-hum types. This book gives me that in a bunch of projects.
The patterns run gauges from a coat at 12 sts to a dress at 28 sts. Gauges in St st are 11, 12, 16, 17, 18, 19 ,20 ,21 ,22 ,23, 25, and 28 sts for 4 inches. Patterns include the long stylish coat on the front and a reversible/flip coat that doubles as a low-hip coat with a short liner to the low-hip coat with a short jacket over it; "keep you warm" to "light as air" cardigans; pullovers great for high-end office setting or out on a date or out for sport occasions with a few vests thrown in. Lots of diversity in style and function.
I find the patterns to be well written. I'm a rather new knitter but, after reading through a few patterns I feel confident that I could make them without issues or with minimal help. To me this will be a go-to book.
The information on each yarn used (yards per ball, St st gauge, fiber content, etc) is provided in the book. This allows easy conversion to determine a good substitute yarn.

I've knitted four garments from this book. They are adaptable to other yarns, are great looking, and not difficult to complete. The sizes are smaller when knitted up. I knit on gauge, which I always test, but needed a medium size for a true small. So measure as you go.

Rowan never fails to have a great variety of patterns, yarns, and level of difficulty in every book. This books has beautiful, wearable patterns, and even living in sunny Southern California you can always find lots to knit.

The glossary and index are always helpful and the patterns are well written and pretty easy to understand. I've never been disappointed. I own 6 Rowan books and love them all!

I'd recommend this book to any advanced beginner to expert knitter who wants something modern, fresh and beautiful.

Beautiful Patterns, wonderful styles that I'd love to make. I have dozens of knitting books and this one has lots that I will enjoy choosing from. I like the new take on styles that quickly can become dated.

I'm always interested in new viewpoints on knits. I love the Rowan perspective. I've found many garment that have caught my eye. I like the longer styles that cover areas of your body you want to cover and keep warm.
I found this initially at the library and knew immediately that I wanted my own copy. I want to knit everything in this.
