Anyone with more than a passing interest in architecture, sacred music, and liturgy for the three monotheistic faiths -- to say nothing of acoustics -- will find this book both informative and engaging. Here one can learn, for example, that a special system of sound amplification that does not use electricity has been developed for Orthodox Jewish congregations, and how reliance on amplified sound has affected the architecture of Evangelical churches. The book is divided into two parts; the longer first section discusses basic acoustical principles, beginning with the nature of sound and how we hear, explained in terms that a layman can understand with a bit of effort. The second part applies this information to synagogues (Orthodox, Conservative, Reform), churches (mainly Roman Catholic and Evangelical), and mosques. Additional material is available from the publisher on the World Wide Web in the form of pdf files on such topics as choosing an organ and a multi-faith chapel for a noisy downtown location. Any congregation contemplating the new building or remodeling of its worship space, or the installation of an organ, would do well to begin its research with this book.

Worship Space Acoustics is an excellent overview of fundamental acoustics concepts and basic acoustical design principles as they apply to synagogues, churches, and mosques. The first part of the book provides a background of acoustics fundamentals; interested readers outside of the architectural acoustics profession will find it especially helpful. For the most part, fairly complex and interrelated concepts are presented clearly and with useful illustrations; in a few cases, readers will want to read further for a fuller understanding of certain concepts, and thankfully the authors have provided an excellent set of references, organized by chapter. There are some unfortunate editorial errors in the text, most of which are easily overlooked. Most readers will want to focus on the second part of the book, which details how these concepts apply to the design of synagogues, churches, and mosques. The acoustical design of such spaces can be a delicate balancing act, and Part 2 of this book provides an excellent primer on the subject.

Clergy and lay members of a sacred community involved with a congregation's building committee will find this book enlightening and useful. Architects and interior designers of sacred spaces will also benefit from the information presented in the first part of the book, which deals with the acoustic science of, and the human perception in, worship spaces. The second part covers the limitations and requirements that the liturgy and service place on sanctuary design. The presentation is non-technical, with a minimum of formulas and equations. The many graphs, charts, tables, and photographs are used effectively to illustrate the basic architectural acoustics principals and design concepts for worship spaces and how these serve the congregation.

After reading this book I have a much deeper appreciation for how to create a better environment for our sanctuary. This is a great technical read for all those wanting to improve the acoustics in their worship spaces. I highly recommend this book!
