The Churches of Egypt : From the Journey of the Holy Family to the Present Day. by Gawdat Gabra.

With over 300 full-color photographs, this is the first fully illustrated book devoted to Christian houses of worship in Egypt. The text incorporates the latest research to complement the broad geographic scope covering nearly all significant Coptic sites throughout the country, from the ancient Coptic churches in Old Cairo to the churches in the monasteries of Wadi al-Natrun, the Red Sea, and Upper Egypt. Churches associated with the Holy Family’s sojourn in Egypt, including Gabal al-Tayr and Dayr al-Muharraq, enrich the volume. Many modern churches housing contemporary Coptic art that have not been dealt with in other publications are featured here—especially the Cathedral of St. Mark and his shrine at Anba Ruweis in Cairo.Churches of all other Christian denominations in Egypt are also described and beautifully illustrated here. A number of famous Greek Orthodox churches are included, as well as two Evangelical Coptic churches. Catholic, Armenian, and Anglican churches designed and decorated by European architects and painters in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century are given their due: they represent little known treasures of Christian art and architecture. Introductory chapters on the history of Christianity in Egypt, the architecture of the Coptic Church, and Coptic wall paintings help readers to appreciate fully the great cultural, artistic, and architectural heritage of Egypt’s Christians.

Thank you for delivering it so quickly; this book is such an inspiration! The Coptic faith has always fascinated me, but there were hardly any texts available at the time (1970's), so I'm gobbling up what I can find, now. No, not 'gobbling', rather 'absorbing' everything I can find in English of this heroic and fascinating religion.

We have traveled to Egypt many times - both to visit the well known pharaonic sites as well as many Christian sites in and around old Cairo. Even having seen some of these sites - I was awed by the vast number of important Christian historical sites and rarely seen treasures that exist throughout Egypt. This now treasured volume will serve as a guide for our future Egypt trips. Because we enjoyed this book so much, we also bought Ludwig's Churches of Los Angeles book - and enjoyed it tremendously as well. Thank you.

This book is just breathtakingly beautiful and very informative. I recommend this book to anyone who has been to Egypt or who has ever dreamed of visiting. You will discover that Egypt is more that just pyramids and tombs but is a place rich in religious history and influence. A must have book!

Because we have and interest in Egypt, we were in awe of this beautiful book. What a valuable find. The pictures of the various church sites are beautiful and just the way we remembered them when we visited and toured Egypt. The historical text, maps, pictures of various arts, and icons, are very informative and easy for us to reference.
