Living in a house on the water is an almost universal desire

Living in a house on the water is an almost universal desire. People are naturally drawn to the water - both for recreation and relaxation - and sites on the water sell quickly. But what is it really like to live on the water? Maine architect Robert Knight explores 24 homes in this book that represent outstanding examples of the relationship of house to water - seaside, lakeside, and riverside - with clear explanation of the design and construction details necessary to create a beautiful house that can withstand the sometimes severe conditions at the waters edge. This is the ultimate inspirational design book for the dream holiday home. A House on the Water blends practical advice with spectacular original photography which will be sure to inspire and inform anyone who already lives at the water's edge or simply dreams of it. Living in a waterside house is an almost universal desire. We are naturally drawn to the water - both for recreation and relaxation - and sites on the water sell quickly. But building a house on the water is full of design and construction challenges.

People are naturally drawn to water, both for recreation and relaxation, and a house on the water is an almost universal desire. But building that house poses design and construction difficulties that few subdivisions can match. Site conditions are often problematic - rocky, hilly, sandy - and the house is constantly exposed to sun, wind, salt, sand, and storm. A suburban home can't withstand those challenges. So what will?

In A House on the Water, Maine architect Robert Knight distills his years of experience designing waterside houses into six distinct themes which take into account the needs of both interior and exterior. Over 300 color photos and numerous floor and site plans showcase 24 homes built to withstand conditions specific to the site, blend seamlessly with the native architecture, and both respect and enhance their place on the water.

If you are looking to remodel your lakefront property or build a new home, this book is for you. We are looking to do some minor "remodeling" on our existing lakefront home in northern Michigan and thought this book may help provoke some new ideas. It did just that. The author is an architect based in Maine and I was intrigued as much by his philosophy of architecture as by the actual homes themselves. The author takes you on an interior and exterior tour of 24 homes, in diverse locations, highlighted in 224 pages of beautiful color photos, illustrations and drawings. His main premise being you take the "goods and trappings of your life, together with your dreams, to make a place that is uniquely your own". Less emphasis is placed on "old school" architectural thought which focuses on the "stylistic trappings of the whole", i.e. floor plans, window types, roofing, etc. His approach is to "reverse engineer" the 24 houses in the book, by "abstracting the design ideas that were used to make them appropriate in their own environment". Knight emphasizes that "houses should be suited to those who live there". His approach made me feel more confident regarding discussions with our local contractor and also got my creative juices flowing with ideas for new projects. A no brainer for a used copy at a buck or two.

Some coffee table books about cabins are so glamorous that they are completely useless. This book is a good guide to the different styles and shapes a waterfront property can take. There are some pricey properties, but they are done in a way that takes the land around it into account. The author even discusses how to make your property live within its environment.

The photography for the properties is thorough and beautiful. It gives inspiration and ideas.

The accompanying text is well received as well. It explains why certain things work and why they don't. It is in my top five for cabin related books.

I had checked this book out at our local library and wanted for my own library. Right now it is out on "loan" to a friend because I thought she and her husband would appreciate it as much as I have. What a dream book!
